IT IS Glasgow Fair weekend – which used to mean, for citydwellers, the factories and offices shut down and the whole place went on holiday.

Nowadays, it is far less strictly adhered to but memories of trips ‘doon the watter’ to Rothesay and Millport, the shows arriving at Glasgow Green, or journeys further afield by bus or by train, live long in memories.

Our photos tell the story of the Glasgow Fair through the decades – from the joyful splashing of the magnificent trio Violet Forsyth (right) and her friends Ann McIlhutton and Betty Skinner in July 1959 in the sea at Ayr to the couple relaxing on the beach during the heatwave of 1953.

(He was off to Aberdeen with his parents.)
