A BRAND new wellbeing centre in Muirend has been given the go ahead, and now organisers are looking for help to fill the space.

Mental health charity, Cultivating Mindfulness, applied for the building on Gavinton Street in Muirend in May, with Glasgow City Council confirming that the charity's bid for the building was successful last week.

With the building secured, Cultivating Mindfulness has now appealed for help to fill the space with vital supplies, including £13k funding to help the building comply with council fire and safety regulations.

Julie Griffin, chief executive of the charity, said: "We are so overjoyed at the fact we've been given this space finally.

"We have been searching for a long time and Muirend is the perfect place because we are able to cover Glasgow and nearby East Renfrewshire and there are great transport links to the building right nearby.

"There is nothing like this in this neck of the wood really."

The building is looking to install things such as fire retardant walls and ceilings in order to be able to move into the space.

The wellbeing centre will house activities such as yoga, pilates, meditation classes for all ages, as well as mindful awareness training and self esteem classes for young people.

Julie said: "This space is a real opportunity to make these skills accessible to all.

"The timing of this couldn't have been better, with the normals stresses of life alongside the current lockdown situation we find ourselves in."

Julie says that the charity is expecting an increase in demand for these types of services as the world slowly gets back to normal, with mental health becoming an important focus for many during lockdown.

She said: "This is such a beautiful space and we are ready as a charity to help deliver important services.

"Mental wellbeing during lockdown has been so important, and especially for young people who may have had added stress from before lockdown began with things like exams."

Julie has also said that the centre will be free for 11 to 25-year-olds to use, making it the first of its kind in the city.

Glasgow Times:

"There is so much stress put on young people in particular these day, living in the digital age.

"Whether it comes to self-esteem, becoming distracted from self-care, or even just taking a step back from those things that are draining your batteries, we feel that we should be helping to equip young people with the skills they need to help manage this.

"This space will give us the opportunity to do that, and at no cost to youngsters."

However, the charity will need the backing to help fill the centre with the materials needed in order to carry out these activities.

Julie said: "We are hoping that we can utilise the building by new year but we are still needing a lot of material and help to do this.

"We have had to cancel fundraisers for obvious reasons which has cut the amount of donation we've had and with new restrictions, we need to tailor it to comply with social distancing rules.

"We know that it is a hard and difficult time for everyone at the moment, but we really feel that this space will benefit the community and further afield also."

The charity has already been backed by Wholesale Domestic Bathrooms Superstore, who have donated a disabled toilet for the building.

"We have had support already, which has been fantastic.

"We are appealing to any other businesses, local or not, to help sponsor us to fill the building, and they will be featured on our 'Community Sponsors Wall' which will take pride of place in our welcome area.

"A space like this is badly needed and we're hoping that, although businesses are going through a really tough time at the moment, they will see the benefit that a donation will make."
