A MAN found with a climber’s knife in a busy city centre street on a Saturday night was jailed for 15 months today.

Jordan Rooney, 26, was snared outside McDonald’s on Glasgow’s Union Street last November.

Police officers were made aware by a concerned member of the public before 10.30pm.

They said: “See him, he’s got a knife on him, don't look.”

Rooney was searched and a blade was recovered from his jacket pocket.

Rooney, of the city’s Maryhill, pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court last week to the unlawful possession of a knife in a public place.

Lawyer Susan Gibson, defending, told the court the knife was used in abseiling for climbing rope.

She said: “His position was that it was in his pocket and he forgot it was in there as he was using it around the house.”

Sheriff Paul Crozier replied: “He was climbing, was he?”

Miss Gibson replied: “No he wasn’t climbing, he was using it to cut boxes.”

Sheriff Paul Crozier told Rooney: “You have a record that does you no favours whatsoever - violence, breaches of court orders and possession of a knife which you received a 10-month sentence.

“Why on earth someone would have this type of item on their person on a Saturday night in Glasgow is beyond me.”
