The Scottish music community has paid heartfelt tributes to Primal Scream star Denise Johnson after the announcement she passed away at the age of 53. 

The cause of her death is currently unknown, however a friend close to Denise shared the sad news on Twitter yesterday evening.

Denise came to the limelight in the 80s in Manchester with soulful vocals before Primal Scream was formed in 1982 in Glasgow by Bobby Gillespie and Jim Beattie.

It was with Primal Scream where Denise and her fellow band members rose to fame, with two of their best-known songs, Higher Than the Sun and Don't Fight it, Feel It.

She was also seen using her musical talent alongside prominent acts such as the Pet

Her family said she been "ill in the week prior to her death, but told friends she was 'much better' on Friday".

A family statement of the Manchester-born vocalist has said that she was discovered holding her inhaler on Monday morning. 

Tributes have since poured in on social media since the death announcement of the soulful vocalist. 

Current Primal Scream member Simone Marie Butler wrote: "Very sad news love and prayers to Denise’s family and loved ones.

"Rest in Power Denise Johnson x"

Johnny Marr of The Smiths said: "Such sad news about our dear friend Denise Johnson.

"Playing alongside her was something else. It was a privilege to work with her."

New Order's official account read: "New Order are devastated to hear the sad news that Denise Johnson has passed away.

"She was a beautiful person with a huge talent. Her voice graced many of our albums and live shows and that of our friends. We will miss her dearly."

Denise had been due to release a debut solo album, Where Does It Go, this year.
