AN LGBT boxing club is to benefit from new equipment and free sessions thanks to a funding boost.

The Edge Gym will welcome a £6,000 which will be used towards its LeGit Boxing Team, the only known boxing group for LGBT in the country.

The funding will allow those users who are not able to pay for sessions to benefit from free use.

However, it’s not yet known when the club will be able to get started as it remains unclear when gyms will reopen.

As previously reported by the Glasgow Times, the Scottish Government has been criticised for it’s lack of a timeline regarding the reopening of gyms across the country.

While fitness fans were able to get back into fitness centre’s south of the border last weekend, Holyrood insists they must remain closed due to the “close social contact, which increases the chance of infection spreading”.

Owner of Edge Gym, Dr Louisa Campbell, said: “We are enormously grateful to Awards for All and sportscotland for this award which allows us to deliver free training and equipment to members of our LeGit Boxing Team (LGBT).

“This is the only boxing group for the LGBT community in Scotland and the grant ensures members have access to health and fitness regardless of ability to pay.

“The team now have a safe and supportive environment to train, learn new skills and socialise inside and outside of the gym.”

The grant, which came from the National Lottery Community Fund in partnership with sportscotland as part of the National Lottery Awards for All Scotland, was also awarded to the Easterhouse Football Academy 2020.

The £5,453 cash will allow the club to provide football opportunities for children and young people in the area.

All nine sport and physical activity projects set to receive grants are part of an overall 285 awards being made to voluntary and community groups in Scotland, totalling £2.1million.
