THE funeral of Coatbridge boxing legend will be streamed live on Facebook.

Rab Bannan funeral mass will take place at St Bartholomew's Church on Saturday at 10 am before he is taken to his final resting place at Old Monkland Cemetery at noon.

A large screen video feed of the funeral mass will also be available for those gathered closed to the church.

We reported last week on the death of the community stalwart who became a local legend for his efforts over the decades to help youngsters from the town.

Rab helped to keep kids on the straight and narrow by the discipline instilled at The Barn boxing club.

He set three-time world champion Ricky Burns on the road to stardom and was recognised for his tireless work at the boxing club with the BBC Sport Unsung Hero award in 2015.

A spokesman for MacGregor Family Funeral Directors said: "It is with deepest sympathy and regret we announce the official funeral arrangements for local legend Mr Robert Bannan.

"In compliance with Scottish Government regulations, attendance at Rab's funeral mass inside St Bartholomew's Church and at Old Monkland Cemetery is severely restricted at this present time.

"However, in liaison with Coatbridge Police and Fr O'Kane we intend to provide an audio and large screen video feed of the funeral mass for those safely gathered in and around the church grounds to pay their final respects while observing social distancing measures and the wearing of face masks where possible."

The funeral director also revealed that Rab will leave his boxing club for a final time on Friday night at 5.15 pm to the sound of songs from the Rocky films.
