TOP Up Taps allowing the public to fill their own water bottles could be introduced at two popular Glasgow locations.

Scottish Water has submitted planning applications to Glasgow City Council requesting permission to install taps at Queen’s Park and the Botanic Gardens.

There is currently one Scottish Water Top Up Tap in the city, on Buchanan Street.

The plans state: “Scottish Water has committed to install outdoor water bottle filling stations across Scotland to encourage and promote the use of refillable bottles which customers can fill up with one of the country’s best-loved products – our nation’s tap water.

“The benefits of topping up with fresh, great tasting tap water are clear – it’s good value and good for the pocket, it’s good for the environment and it’s good for health.”

They add: “We would like to invite Glasgow City Council to benefit from the provision of a further Top Up Tap to complement the existing Taps we have in Scotland’s Central belt.”

They want to serve patrons of the garden and the park – “namely locals, walkers, runners and cyclists”.

The first Top Up Tap was installed outside the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh while the tap in Milngavie, at the start of the West Highland Way, has proved popular.

The Your Water Your Life campaign was launched in June 2018. Taps are plumbed into the public water supply and have digital tracking technology to log how much water is being used.

They were turned off during lockdown but are working again now, with a programme of cleaning and inspection in place.

Brian Lironi, director of corporate affairs at Scottish Water, has previously said: “We started this as a pilot project but the response has convinced us of the opportunity to expand the number of taps available so that even more people can enjoy our fantastic and great tasting Scottish drinking water.”

He added: “We hope it becomes the norm for people to take a reusable bottle out with them and fill up from state-of-the-art taps.”
