VOLUNTEERS from across Glasgow who regularly discuss city-wide school matters will host a series of online events to support parents as children return to school.

Glasgow City Parents Group (GCPG) is holding a string of online sessions titled ‘returning to school’ to provide parents, carers and guardians with the knowledge and information to support their children for a return to school in the new term.

The group which works in partnership with the local authority aim to provide parenting tips, support parental relationships with children and teenagers and provide ideas on how to encourage their learning as well as taking care of yourself as a parent.

All events will be held online via Zoom, hosted by GCPG with a variety of topics presented by partnership organisations.

The two upcoming conferences that have been confirmed and a date set will be on Thursday, August 27 titled supporting your child’s return to learning and on Tuesday, September 1.

September’s virtual meeting will be called supporting your teenager’s return to learning and will be presented by the Central Parenting Team.

Leanne McGuire, of the GCPG, said: “Our main function as a group is to support parents and parent councils across the city.

“Delivering events like this is not new to us as we have always delivered events like this but they were always face to face, normally held in evenings at the Gaelic School but with lockdown restrictions we took our events online. We wanted to continue our support for parents, carers and Parent Councils in this ‘new normal’.

“We started our first online events in April with a series of Q&A sessions with Maureen McKenna, Glasgow Education Director.

“Our next series of events have been developed through various comments and conversations we have had from families about trying to keep their children motivated to learn during lockdown or struggling to find a good routine.

“If Glasgow ever ended up in a local lockdown, GCPG wanted to help prepare parents better for this and provide them support for their child’s return to school.

“Schools have been great at supporting pupils and teachers so as a group we try to provide support to parents and carers that will compliment what is being done in schools.”
