RECYCLING and cleansing services need more help to keep Glasgow clean, an MSP has said.

Labour MSP Johann Lamont said budget cuts have hit services and asked the Scottish Government what it was doing about it.

She said: “Does the minister understand that the cuts that have been made year after year to Glasgow’s budget mean that there is less money to fund much-needed services such as those?”

She asked if the city council had been in contact with the Scottish Government to ask for more resources the city “so desperately needs to support the front-line workers who have the difficult job of keeping Glasgow clean”.

Natural environment minister  Mhairi Gougeon said she didn’t have details of contact between government and council available to her but would look into it and respond.

The minister added: “Local authorities are responsible for decisions on the provision of local waste services within the existing statutory framework.

“Zero Waste Scotland provides councils with advice and assistance to support and improve recycling services.”
