WORK has begun to dismantle the historic Queen's Park glasshouse dome.

Contractors began working this week to take apart the dome atop the South Side glasshouse. 

The council said that the dome is deteriorating and was causing concerns about the safety of the structure.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “Since its closure in 2017 due to safety concerns, the dome condition has unfortunately continued to deteriorate. We are concerned an uncontrolled collapse could also impact other parts of the 115-year-old glasshouse.

“Carefully dismantling the dome addresses the safety issue, but also give us a chance to preserve the structure for future use. The glasshouse is much cherished by the local community and we are looking at its long term future as part of the city-wide review of glasshouses."

The Glasgow Times can reveal pictures of work beginning to take down the 115-year-old dome, which crowns Queen's Park glasshouse.

Campaigners have however raised fears about the long-term future of the glasshouse and a petition was started last month to put pressure on the council to refurbish the historic landmark.

Gilean Young, creator of the Facebook page "Death of the Winter Gardens at Glasgow Green: 1898 to 31 December 2018", a pressure group to preserve winter gardens and glasshouse across the city has raised concerns about the funds required to refurbish the structure.

She is worried the glasshouse could close permanently. 

Council workers have erected signs outside the site informing visitors to the park of the work and encouraging residents to engage with the Friends of Queen's Park over the future of the building.
