NO changes are currently being made to Glasgow Life’s schedule for reopening gyms and sports facilities despite new Scottish Government guidance.

Nicola Sturgeon has announced gyms, swimming pools and indoor sports courts can reopen from Monday, August 31.

But Glasgow Life, which runs cultural and sporting activities for the city council, is not planning to reopen any gyms until Monday, September 14 – the Government’s previous date for reopening.

A spokesperson said the organisation wanted to “take the time to ensure our venues reopen safely”.

The gym, fitness classes and indoor courts, but not the pools, at Glasgow Club Scotstoun and the National Badminton Academy, Glasgow Club Bellahouston and Glasgow Club Donald Dewar are set to reopen on Monday, September 14.

Glasgow Clubs at Kelvin Hall and Castlemilk are set to offer gym, fitness classes and indoor courts from Monday, September 21.

By Monday, September 28, the swimming pools, as well as gyms, fitness classes and courts, are scheduled to open at Glasgow Club Gorbals and Tollcross International Swimming Centre.

Gym and fitness classes, but no the pools, at Glasgow Clubs in Maryhill and Springburn are planned to open on October 5.

On Monday, October 12, the gym and fitness classes, but not the spa, are set to be available at the Emirates Arena.

The Glasgow Life spokesperson said: “Our current schedule for reopening of pools and indoor sports facilities is still based on ensuring Glasgow Life’s reopening plans for the estate remain deliverable by the Scottish Government’s indicative date of Monday, September 14.

“We’ve been working towards this schedule for several weeks and it’s important we take the time to ensure our venues reopen safely.

“We look forward to opening our first indoor sporting facilities as planned on September 14 and welcoming back our Glasgow Club members.”

Outdoor pitches are scheduled to open at Glasgow Club Scotstoun, Glasgow Green Football Centre and Toryglen Regional Football Centre from Monday, August 24.

Glasgow Life is facing the "toughest financial period in its history" due to the impact of lockdown.

The organisation has reported losses of around £12m after its income was wiped out when lockdown was imposed in March.

A spokesperson has said: "Against this financial backdrop we cannot currently plan to re-activate all of the 171 venues and facilities in our portfolio.

"We know we’re not dealing with a short-term crisis and it won’t be a quick return to ‘normality’, rather the creation of a new normal for Glasgow Life.

"As such, the visitor experience within the venues we are reopening will be different for the foreseeable future."
