Dog walkers in the East End have been warned to remain vigilant after images were shared on social media of water at a river turning purple.

Footage taken by concerned onlookers shows the river at Tollcross Park completely change colour.

Glasgow Times:

One concerned resident said: "Walking my dog round the park today and noticed that the water in the river is bright purple, asked around and apparently someone has been dumping chemicals.

"Just be careful in case your dogs jump in the water. Pictures can't really show how bright the colour is."

The issue is now being investigated by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

A spokesman said: “Every day SEPA works to protect and enhance Scotland’s environment and takes all reports of pollution seriously.

“On Wednesday 19 August, SEPA received reports that water in Tollcross Burn was an inky black colour.

“Our officers are investigating and understand that the discolouration had ceased, until receiving reports of a purple hue in the same watercourse on Friday 21 August.

“SEPA is working to identify the source of the discolouration and is also liaising with Scottish Water, which is also investigating the matter."

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: “We have been made aware of the purple colour flowing through Tollcross burn at Tollcross Park. We understand that the purple discolouration of the water has also been spotted further upstream beyond Earlybraes Park.

“This incident has been reported to SEPA  and it is being investigated.  Until the cause of the discolouration of the water has been established, it is advisable for people to stay away from the burn.”
