CARDONALD Councillors are pushing for an earlier re-opening of Cardonald Library, after Glasgow Life began a phased re-opening of facilities.

Councillor Alex Wilson and Councillor Elaine McSporran have written to bosses at Glasgow Life to ask for a review of the opening date of Cardonald Library, which is currently unknown.

Councillor McSporran said: “We have written to Glasgow Life to request that they review the reopening dates for Cardonald as this is such an important facility in the heart of our community and is vitally important especially for those who are isolated.

“We of course understand the enormous constraints placed upon Glasgow Life at this time and we will continue to provide our support in their decisions to the re-openings.”

Glasgow Life began re-opening a small number of libraries from August 10, including Ibrox Library, which has been offered as an alternative to local residents.

McSporran added: “At the moment our constituents have the use of Ibrox Library but this option may not be suitable for everyone.”

A recent change.org petition was launched to help save Glasgow Life libraries, including Govanhill, Langside and Pollokshields, from closure following financial trouble during lockdown.

Despite fears, the councillors lament that this is not the case for Cardonald, and that the library will in fact re-open.

Councillor Wilson said: “We are looking forward to the facility opening again. There has been many rumours out there that the library may close but we have had every assurance that this will not be the case.

"The library underwent a significant upgrade therefore it would not be cost effective to close such a vital facility.”

A spokesperson for Glasgow Life said: “We have been very clear that the financial challenge facing Glasgow Life because of Covid-19 is unprecedented. We’re currently working on the phased reopening of a number of our venues across the city in line with Scottish Government guidance, and have already reopened the iconic Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, several libraries, and some outdoor golf, lawn bowls, and tennis venues.

"However, currently there is no planned opening date for Cardonald Library."
