Tributes have been paid to seven brave firefighters who died in a tragic fire on Kilbirnie Street.

Today marks the 48th-anniversary of the warehouse blaze which took place in 1972.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service staff will mark the anniversary at Glasgow's Necropolis.

On August 25, 1972, one of the firefighters became trapped in the warehouse, with six of his colleagues going in to rescue him.

However, after rescuing him, a massive flashover of high temperature overtook the building.

The loss is one of the biggest for the UK fire service at a single incident.

A Fatal Accident Inquiry later revealed that the fire spread across the hardboard clad first-floor ceiling which led to the flashover that ended up engulfing the men who died.

Glasgow Times:

The victims of the fire included Divisional officer Andrew P. Quinn, leading fireman Alistair Crofts and firemen Duncan A. McMillan, Allan Finlay, Iain R. Berhingham, James W. Rook, and William Mcl. Hooper.

A statement by SFRS reads: "On this day in 1972, seven brave firefighters lost their lives fighting a serious fire at Kilbirnie Street in Glasgow.

"Today we remember and SFRS staff are marking the 48th anniversary of the disaster at Glasgow's Necropolis."
