A senior Glasgow MSP has resigned from the Labour front bench team calling on leader Richard Leonard to resign.

James Kelly, has quit as the party Justice Spokesman at Holyrood, with a damning assessment of the party leader saying that Mr Leonard cannot lead the party into next year’s election.

He said he raised his concerns three weeks ago and told Mr Leonard he had to resign and since then has watched Mr Leonard’s performance.

Labour have just four Glasgow MSPs going into the election next year.

They lost to the SNP in every constituency seat in the city at the last election and Mr Kelly fears they will fall even further under Mr Leonard's leadership.

Glasgow Times:

Mr Kelly said: "Recent Polling shows Scottish Labour support at an unacceptably low level of 14%.

“This has been a worrying and consistent trend for some time.

“In addition, your personal poll ratings are particularly low. More than half the public have no opinion of you and you have a negative rating even among our own supporters.”

He said that will lead to a “catastrophic" result at the 2021 election.

Mr Kelly said he had no confidence in Mr Leonard to turn the Labour Party fortunes around.

He stated: "I firmly and sincerely believe that it is in the best interests of the Labour Party that you stand down as leader.”
