A DRIVER who sped from an unmarked police vehicle as he thought someone was chasing him was fined £400 today.

Edward Haley, 28, was caught speeding in his Audi by officers on Glasgow’s M8 motorway last May.

Haley also undertook cars and tailgated vehicles while being tracked by the unmarked car.

He later made a claim that he thought someone was following him for a “sinister reason.”

Haley, from Airdrie, pleaded guilty today at Glasgow Sheriff Court to careless driving.

The nightclub alterations manager was also given four points on his driving licence by Sheriff Shona Gilroy.

The court heard officers' attention was drawn to Haley’s motor going through several lanes.

Prosecutor Shona Howie told the court Haley then accelerated before being followed by police.

He continued to travel through lanes on the road.

Miss Howie said: “He travelled at speed which was in excess of 80mph when the road changed to 70mph.”

Officers flashed their lights and sounded their sirens before Haley stopped and then was arrested.

Bob McCormick, defending, told the court officers in unmarked vehicles are not allowed to stop cars and were to call for a marked car instead.

He added: “Mr Haley thought this was a car that was pursuing him for whatever reason and there may have been a sinister reason.

“The car sped up behind him when he was keeping to the speed limit and then he sped up.”
