A line of limited edition trainers inspired by some of the city's beloved beverages is the latest collection to be launched by a Glasgow firm.

Glasgow Customs - a company set up by two city postgraduates - is celebrating Buckfast, MadDog and Tennent's lager with their new line named Guilty Pleasures.

Behind the quirky collection is two schoolfriends from the Scottish Borders, Fergus McPhillimy and Ewan Angus - both 23 - who are bidding to bring something new to the shoe market.

Fergus told the Glasgow Times: “I graduated from uni in May after doing a masters in engineering and just as I graduated and as lockdown started, we decided to start the business as we kind of seen lockdown coming and we wanted to start something productive.

“We did our first release on July 16 with the landmark collection which included the Duke of Wellington, the craned and the Armadillo. So this is our second launch.

“At the moment, all of our designs are Glasgow-inspired. We do have plans to expand in the future and possibly do other cities and Scotland as a whole. But we want to establish ourselves as a Glasgow company."

The creative duo are directing their bespoke Nike Air range to all age groups as they hope their designs will bring smiles to their customers' faces.

Fergus continued: “You could say it’s like a tongue and cheek kind of thing. We had the idea from the start to do something related to Buckfast and MadDog because it’s so recognisable and connected to all Glaswegians.

“It also seem to bring a smile to every Glaswegian’s face – even from all ages. It’s kind of like a Dad reliving his youth through our shoes. It’s always a laugh.

“We see our chance with the gap in the market so we thought we’d give it a go."

Ferugs, who also works at a bar in the Merchant City, is warning keen customers to act fast, as Guilty Pleasures will only be available for one month - and one month only.

He added: “Each launch is a limited edition collection and when it ends they won’t be available again. We’re currently doing a made-to-order approach so we don’t have a warehouse full of these shoes pre-made… hopefully at some point in the future!

“We currently hand-paint all of the shoes and it takes around maybe four to five hours to do each pair, excluding of course all of the thought that goes into the design from idea to reality.

"We’ve had a really great reaction in general, especially to our second launch and we really do appreciate it.”
