A THUG brutally attacked a stranger who he wrongly believed had earlier assaulted him.

John McLintoch smacked Steven Hughes with a glass bottle then repeatedly punched the stricken 28-year-old.

The 36-year-old fled leaving his blood-soaked victim lying on the ground on Buchanan Street last December 30.

It emerged McLintoch had been attacked himself that night outside a nearby chip shop.

Prosecutor Mark Allan told Glasgow Sheriff Court: “Mr Hughes was wearing similar clothing worn by one of the men who assaulted McLintoch.

“However, he had no involvement in the previous incident.”

The victim was left with a number of injuries including a fractured skull.

He luckily did not need surgery and was able to leave hospital days later.

McLintoch was locked up for 27 months after he pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Hughes to his severe injury, permanent disfigurement and to the danger of his life.
