THE inspirational work of the Millport Support Group will be remembered long after lockdown - thanks to a new mural of the group’s logo.

The group of volunteers, who have been supporting the island’s most vulnerable during the pandemic, created a competition to design a symbol.

Islander Natasha Ferguson was the winner and her creation came to life thanks to the generosity of the Isle of Cumbrae Distillers.

The distillery has sponsored the logo bed and will plant it up to bring the logo to life outside their shop.

Co-owner Philippa Dalton said: “The island residents have taken on responsibility from North Ayrshire Council to maintain some of the larger planting beds on Cumbrae.

“We have decided to volunteer to upkeep the bed directly outside our new shop and wanted to use it to showcase the winning entry for designing the Millport Support Group logo.

"Natasha was a worthy winner and it will be great to bring her creation to life."

The support group on the island is now winding down as the need for their services decreases, but Philippa was keen to pay tribute to their work.

She said: “I was one of the team who used to go and take people books or prescriptions, everyone has done really well and the bonds that have been formed are lasting.

“North Ayrshire Council has been very appreciative of the work that’s been done on the island in helping the elderly and those who are shielding.

“We’re relieved that we don’t need to have that type of support anymore as lockdown is gently easing, but it’s good to know the systems are in place if we need them again.”
