Boris Johnson has announced a range of new lockdown restrictions for England.

He revealed a curfew on pubs and restaurants, meaning they must close at 10pm from Thursday.

Face coverings will be mandatory in public transport and in retail.

Businesses will be fined if they breach rules of up to £10,000.

Nicola Sturgeon is due to announce new restrictions for Scotland at 2.20pm today and speak in a television broadcast tonight at 8.05pm.

The announcements come after Boris Johnson and Nicola Sturgeon had a meeting with First Ministers of Wales and Northern Ireland to discuss plans.

The number of people who can meet up has been lowered to a maximum of 15 at weedings but remains 30 at funerals 

Rule of six will apply to all adult indoor team sports.

Mr Johnson said schools, colleges and universities would stay open.

The penalty for not wearing mask or breaking the rule of six will double to £200

The Prime Minister said: "We always knew the prospect of a second wave was real. I'm sorry to say we have reached a perilous turning point."

Mr Johnson told the House of Commons he wanted to avoid  a full lockdown but that needs people to change their behaviour.

He said: "Tens of thousands of new cases in October would lead to hundreds of daily deaths in November."

He added: "This is the moment we must act."

He said rules could be in place for six months.

The UK Government changes for England come after the Chief Medical Officer for England, Chris Whitty gave a televised briefing yestarday explaining how the virus was growing again.

The coronavirus threat level was raised to Level 4 which means “Transmission is high or rising exponentially”.
