A GREENOCK mum says she is incredibly touched after a sponsored walk in memory of her baby son raised thousands for her charity.

Kim Woodman has been overwhelmed by the support received from the community and further afield for her twin nephews who walked 300 miles to raise money for the Matthew Woodman Foundation.

Her 20-month-old son Matthew died on the Isle of Lewis two years ago while on holiday visiting his gran.

Since his death two years ago Kim has been determined to ensure his name lives on and to help other families and good causes.

Kim made an emotional journey back to the island to thank Matthew's cousins - nine-year-olds Arran and Lewis Goetz - and their two friends Charlie and Grace Morrison.

The fab four set out on their 'million steps for Matthew’ challenge in late August.

The idea came from Matthew’s final journey from the Isle of Lewis back home to be laid to rest in Greenock.

The youngsters decided to join in the fundraising to support Kim's own upcoming Moonlight Walk of the Esplanade for her son and they covered around 25,000 steps a day in all weathers.

Kim says she was reduced to tears when she found out what the kids had planned.

She said: "My nephews and their pals did such a great job walking all those steps.

“When they first told me what they were doing I thought it was amazing.

“I was so moved, I was crying.

"I can't thank everyone enough for their support.

"We have even had donations from America.

"Morton have been incredible as well and that means such a lot because my husband Billy and our family are massive fans.

"We have raised so much money which we will use to help families in Lewis and here in Inverclyde as well."

Morton sent special Ton strips to the youngsters – with Matthew’s name and ‘Million’ on the back – and helped promote their cause along with the Tele.

The children's walk even found its way onto a news bulletin on BBC Alba.

Kim, her husband Billy and their son Harvey were left devastated by the death of Matthew in August 2018.

He fell ill at his gran's house and died from an undetected heart defect.

Mum Kim set up a foundation in his name and she wants to help families with children in hospital in his name.

She creates ‘Ray of Light’ boxes – including items such as baby outfits, muslin squares, blanket and hats and mittens - for tots born prematurely.

Former offshore worker Kim is now at college studying nursing and hopes to go into midwifery.

Determined Kim says the forthcoming Moonlight Walk can go ahead despite the coronavirus and she has had special medals struck for all those taking part in next month's event.

She said: "I just want to do something to bring everyone together and we will have all the appropriate restrictions in place.

"I just want to light the Esplanade up for Matthew.

"I think it will be good for our mental health to get outdoors and walk."

The walk will take place on Saturday October 17 from 7 to 9.30pm and more information about it is available at www.facebook.com/matthewwoodmanfoundation
