A SOUTH Side hospice is appealing for storage space, after they were inundated with donations over summer.

The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice, based in Bellahouston Park, sent out an urgent call for space after lockdown DIY-ers donated to the charity in bulk.

Rhona Baillie, chief executive of The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice, commented: “We were absolutely delighted with the response to our call for donations. During lockdown we had to close our retails shops and cancel all our fundraising events.

“Even now, we are still not able to run our normal charity events and we are in the process of slowly re-opening our shops on a phased basis to ensure the health and safety of our customers and staff.

“However, as a charity, we rely heavily on public donations so we can keep on providing the gold standard of care for people with terminal or life-limiting illnesses.

"So, we are doing all we can to maximise the donations we receive and run as cost-effectively as possible."

While the coronavirus lockdown closed the charity's shop and shut down fundraising events, The Pince & Princess of Wales Hospice were still able to take in donations of furniture and other items at special drive-thru events at their Bellahouston Park home.

The drive-thru events, which took place over three days in June, proved a success with people, as over 1,000 cars visited the hospice during the summer.

However, an evident increase of re-decorating and DIY projects during lockdown has lead to the hospice taking in an unprecedented amount of donation, with no where to store them.

The charity is now looking for a space of around 3,000 square feet to hold the excess in donations, after filling their usual Hillington depot to the brim.

Rhona said: “If anyone has or knows a business which may have an empty storage unit of approximately 3,000 square feet in the Glasgow or surrounding area, and who may consider donating it to us for a period of six months, we would be so grateful."

“We are keen to start our popular furniture collection service so ideally this unit would be used to store donated furniture until it is ready for re-sale."
