Amateur photographers have been making a bee-line to the dark sky area at Portencross over recent evenings with the hope of capturing the spectacular sight of the aurora borealis.

This amazing picture was taken by West Kilbride man Peter Ribbeck a few years ago.

The phenomenon is caused by collisions between electrical charged particles from solar winds and the earth’s atmosphere providing an illuminating light show in the night's skies.

The Met Office stated: " There is a chance of further minor geomagnetic storms this evening, with a gradual decrease in activity through the following couple of days. There is a chance of seeing aurora in Scotland tonight."
