POLICE have pledged to crack down on groups of unruly youths gathering in woods in Houston.

Officers have been called to a number of incidents involving youngsters engaging in anti-social behaviour at Houstonfield Dam, near Strathgryffe Tennis Club.

Councillor Jim Sheridan, who represents Houston, Crosslee and Linwood, told The Gazette that some of the troublemakers have been getting dropped off in the area by their parents.

He said: “There was an incident recently involving over 150 young people at this location, some of whom I understand were quite abusive towards local residents.

“I believe the police are trying to get more resources to deal with this but the problem is they do not have any advanced notice about these groups meeting up in the area.

“The local residents empathise with the fact that these youngsters want to meet their friends and release some of the energy that’s been built up during lockdown but they’re also concerned about their own safety and protecting their properties.”

Police are now calling for parents to ensure they know the whereabouts of their children and make sure they are abiding by coronavirus guidelines.

Inspector Allan O’Hare, head of community policing for Renfrewshire, said: “We are aware of concerns from local residents regarding youths congregating in large numbers in this area, having arranged to meet through social media.

“Recently, my officers attended a meeting with residents, the local councillor and representatives from the local school to discuss the issue and find ways to address it.

“We increased patrols in the Houston area and brought in additional officers from our national teams, including mounted branch officers, to assist.

“I would ask that parents are aware of where their children are and ensure they are not dropping them off at this location, as has happened previously.”
