WATCH out London, Paris and New York – Dennistoun is coming to get you.

The east end neighbourhood has been named one of the world’s coolest places by culture guide Time Out.

Dennistoun made it to number eight in the global Top 40, beating the likes of Amsterdam, Montreal and Dublin.

The listing says young students from Strathclyde University “have breathed new life” into the area over the last decade and adds: “East Coffee Company and Mesa offer exciting brunches on the buzzing Duke Street and innovative craft breweries are moving in.

“During the pandemic, the area was strengthened by initiatives like the Zero Waste Market – a refill grocery shop for boxes of essential foods – and Alexandra Park’s Food Forest, where locals of all backgrounds meet to plant and grow for a more sustainable future.”

Dennistoun Community Councillor Lauren Bennie said: "Dennistoun is still number one on our list as the coolest neighbourhood around - we’ll wait for Time Out to catch up.

"People make a place what it is, so this achievement is a reflection of how our community, the people of Dennistoun, are the beating heart of our neighbourhood.”

Graham Sharp, who runs the Zero Waste Market, said he was delighted to be mentioned.

"There's a great mix of small independent businesses in Dennistoun and we love being part of that," he said. "I live here too and there's such a brilliant community spirit and just generally really friendly, easy going people.

"We think it's a class place to live."

James Manning, Time Out International Editor said: “Glasgow is a fantastic city and right now Dennistoun is at the cutting edge of the city’s cool, with independents popping up and artists brightening up the winding streets.

“We were really blown away by the amazing initiatives that businesses and locals started at the beginning of the pandemic – it showed there was real heart in the neighbourhood.”

Since 2018, the annual list has been collated from the opinions of locals via the annual Time Out Index survey of over 38,000 global city residents, answering where they most loved spending their time out around their city.

To rank the list this year, Time Out’s global network of editors and experts factored in not just great vibes, food, drink, nightlife and independent culture, but also community spirit, praising the neighbourhoods where people showed unconditional love and support for the communities and local businesses who represent the soul of the city.

The top three spots went to Esquerra de l'Eixample in Barcelona, where neighbours organised mass dance parties on their balconies during lockdown; Downtown Los Angeles, focus of peaceful Black Lives Matter protests; and Sham Shui Po in Hong Kong, a hub of artistic creativity.

James added: “With global travel in disarray, this year our annual list of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods is less about planning your next trip and more about celebrating the hotspots that are pointing the way forward for city life.

“In tough times, neighbourhoods are more important than ever – and these are places where the soul of the city is on full display, thanks to independent businesses, local culture and community initiatives. Consider this list a worldwide shout-out to the strength, spirit and resilience of city-dwellers.”
