Nicola Sturgeon is to give a statement to the Scottish Parliament tomorrow on any new lockdown rules being imposed.

The First Minister said the virus was particularly pronoucned in the central belt in Glasgow and Lothian but that it was rising in most parts of Scotland.

She said the government has received "very strong public health advice that action over and above what we are doing now" is needed.

Speculation has been that there could be a shutdown of hospitality from Friday for a period.

Ms Sturgeon said there is "understandable speculation" and said she is not proposing another lockdown. "not even on a temporary basis".

She said: "We are not asking people to stay inside their own homes.

"Restrictions on travel are not about to be imposed on the whole country.

"And we are not proposing to close schools."

But she said they were looking at "additional targeted steps in addition over the next few weeks".

She said "We discussed plans for responding to the increase. Cabinet did not reach any further decision. We will meet again early tomorrow."

She said she wanted to tell people "what we are not proposing to do" in response to speculation about "circuit-breaker" lockdowns.

She added: "This is probably the most difficult decision point we have faced."

She revealed the latest statistics which showed there were 800 positive cases in the last 24 hours. Of that, 303 were in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board area.

There were 262 people in hospital, an increase of  44  and there were 25 in intensive care.

There were two deaths registered in the last 24 hours of people who had tested positive for Covid-19.
