DENNISTOUNIANS have given a mixed verdict on the news their area has been voted the eighth “coolest” place to live in the world.

Alec, a customer in the Alexandra pub on Duke Street joked that he thought the East End area was the number one coolest area in the world but felt there was a diminishing community spirit.

He said: “There’s no community spirit anywhere any more, you could fall out the pub and people would just walk by you.”

The area’s newfound trendiness has come at a cost to some local residents, who worry about the impact of gentrification on the neighbourhood.

Jude McKechnie, 23, was born and bred in the area and has seen it change dramatically.

She said: “Seeing the news was a bit of an eye-roll for me.

“I like my wee trendy coffee but is that accessible for the working-class families to go and spend £12 on lunch at a posh cafe?”

Maria Varela, who founded the Andina cafe three months ago would beg to differ.

“We have a lot of locals in and they are very helpful and have really helped us in promoting the place,” she said.

David Brown, one of the co-owners of the Palais thought it was the diversity of the area which made it great.

He said: “We’ve got loads of really good regulars.

“People are always looking out for each other here.”

Both camps seem to agree that Dennistoun is still a great place to live, whatever you are after.
