POLICE Scotland have confirmed that new playground equipment
at Cardonald Primary School has been vandalised.

The incident is thought to have taken place at some point on the weekend of October 3-4, with damage made to new playground equipment in the Upper School playground.

It is believed that the equipment was installed after fundraising from both parents and kids at the school, and was yet to be fully used by the school.

A representative for Police Scotland said: “Around 9.45 am on Monday, 5 October, 2020, police were called to a report of a vandalism at a primary school in Angus Oval, Cardonald, Glasgow. Inquiries are continuing.”

Parents were sent notice of the vandalism incident, with letters asking that parents and local residents look out for anyone gaining entry to school grounds outwith school hours and to report any such behaviour.

After a spate of vandalism and break-in incidents at South Side primary and secondary schools earlier this year, including reports of three primary school broken into in one night, education bosses pleaded with vandals to “stop attacking our schools”.

Those targeted in the attacks included Our Lady of Annunciation Primary School, Merrylee Primary School, St Fillan’s Primary School and Kings Park Secondary School.

Speaking previously, Chris Cunningham, City Convener for Education, Skills and Early Years, said: “Please stop targeting our schools – the emergency services have a much more important job to do – and stop causing unnecessary upset to our school communities.”

The damage to the playground at Cardonald Primary School has been condemned by Glasgow City Council, which has called on those responsible to “reflect on their actions”.

A council spokesman said: “Damage to any property is always distressing and especially when this is new equipment that’s intended to enhance the school community.

“The school has reported the damage to the police and hopefully the people responsible will reflect on their actions and have more respect in the future.”
