A FORMER Barrhead solicitor has coined in more than £4,000 for three worthy causes after tackling a lung-bursting charity run.

Adrian Ward, 76, set himself the task of running 10 miles from Uplawmoor to Dunlop and back – and completed his challenge in just one hour and 50 minutes.

Fellow Barrhead Rotarians and neighbours were on hand to flag Adrian off from Arthurlie Drive and, as he passed farms along the route, workers came out to provide encouraging applause.

Adrian suffered two major health scares recently after retiring four years ago from his work as a lawyer with Turnbull & Ward, in Barrhead’s Main Street, which he formed in 1968.

In 2018, he needed treatment for prostate cancer and, last year, he suffered a heart attack, which also led to major surgery.

A third of the money raised from his latest run will go towards Prostate Scotland, which supports the early diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.

Another third will benefit the Levern Valley Defibrillator Community Partnership, which provides defibrillators in the Barrhead, Neilston and Uplawmoor areas.

The remaining money will go to a fund administered by the Rotary Club of Barrhead to benefit local organisations.

After the run, a slightly out-of-breath Adrian told the Barrhead News: “That went better than I expected.

“I want to thank everyone who has sponsored me and supported my effort to raise money for three charities close to my heart.”

Adrian, who hails from Uplawmoor and has three daughters and four grandchildren, has been taking part in charity runs, including several marathons, since the early 1970s and was awarded an MBE for services to people with learning disabilities in 1992.
