Any further coronavirus restrictions imposed on Glasgow must be backed by greater business support, it has been warned.

Glasgow Conservative Group Leader, Thomas Kerr, is calling on the Scottish Government to commit to full transparency on any decisions that may be rolled out in Glasgow in the coming days.

His comments come as First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is expected to unveil the different coronavirus tier restrictions to Scotland in the coming days.

It is currently unknown what tier Glasgow will be placed on, however a leaked COSLA letter has suggested the city will be placed on tier three - which would be similar to the restrictions residents and businesses are currently under.

There has, however, been speculation that Glasgow could be placed on tier four, which would impose stricter restrictions.

Councillor Kerr has called on the SNP Government to deliver greater and more urgent support to businesses that are currently closed and will have to remain closed, particularly those in the city’s hospitality sector.

He claims the UK Government Chancellor Rishi Sunak has delivered £700 million worth of funding to the SNP Government earlier this month, only for the SNP to sit on this vital money.

He said: “While we recognise the need to control the spread of the virus, we are also facing an economic and jobs crisis here in Glasgow.

“That is why with any further restrictions continuing or being heightened, the SNP Government must urgently deliver funding to our businesses, particularly those currently closed in the vital hospitality sector.

“Rishi Sunak has delivered £700m worth of funding and the SNP must get that funding out the door now, whatever tier Glasgow is placed in.

“People across Glasgow will continue to follow the rules, but they need to see the justification behind continued restrictions.

“Any decisions must come with a firm commitment to release the data and science behind them.

“I’ll be continuing to stand up for our businesses and lobby the SNP locally and nationally to give them the money they desperately need.”

His calls come as city centre nightclub owner, Donald MacLeod, warned venues are losing between "50 per cent and 75 per cent" of their most profitable trading hours due to Covid-19 restrictions placed on the industry.

Mr MacLeod, who owns The Garage and Cathouse, has written to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to suggest alternative options that could potentially help the industry during the pandemic.

A Scottish Government spokesman said: “No decisions have been taken on what level local authorities will be in and any speculation is premature.

"Parliament will consider the framework tomorrow and decisions will only be taken once parliament has had that opportunity and on the basis of the most up to date information on prevalence of the virus.

“The Strategic Framework set out the economic support available to business within the limits of the financial settlement the Scottish Government receives from the UK government.”
