CONTROVERSIAL proposals have been submitted to increase the size of an East End landfill.

Council planning chiefs will now consider the bid to extend the height of waste at Patersons of Greenoakhill from 48 metres to 64m.

The application for the site, in Mount Vernon, has so far been overwhelmingly opposed by the local area with concerns raised about the smell and impact on house prices.

David Linden, Glasgow East MP, is among those to express his opposition to the plans.

He said: “I have been in touch with many constituents who have raised serious objections to the expansion of the Patersons of Greenoakhill landfill.

“Many local residents have highlighted health concerns, the litter affecting the environment and local wildlife, the multiple breaches of landfill license and the high levels of pollution as reasons for their opposition to the site.

“I am standing with my constituents and voicing my opposition to the expansion of the landfill. I am urging Glasgow City Council [GCC] to refuse Paterson’s of Greenoakhill application.”

A planning statement submitted to GCC reads: "Scottish Government imposed a ban on Biodegradable Municipal Waste (BMW) being sent to landfill from 2021.

"This ban on landfilling of BMW has been pushed back to 2025 in recognition of the fact that there are insufficient waste management and treatment facilities available at the current time for the diversion of this waste stream from landfill."

Locals can have their say on the plans until Wednesday, November 18. Visit the council's planning website and use the reference 20/02460/FUL.
