WHEELIE bins are being stolen from gardens across Milton before being taken to empty land and set on fire, it has been claimed.

Local residents claim CCTV footage shows two people enter a gate and into the garden of a property before one person lifts a wheelie bin and carries it out.

Residents believe groups of people are stealing bins from various streets every night of the week and have been for the past two weeks.

One person, who asked not to be named, said: “It needs to stop. They are stealing people’s bins, including pensioners. And when the bins are replaced, they’re stolen again.

“They are out stealing them every night from all over.

“There are crowds gathering at the weekend to burn the bins. The thick black smoke is not on.”

One resident said that every blue bin in their street was stolen at the weekend, and the week before it was green bins.

Footage and pictures show the mess left after bins have been burn out on empty land at Shapinsay Street.

Bob Doris, MSP for Maryhill and Springburn, said: “I have been contacted by constituents about wheelie bins repeatedly being stolen and then dumped elsewhere, and at times set alight.

“I understand the council have been supportive in replacing the bins, but the theft and mindless vandalism needs to stop.

“I am also contacting Police Scotland to see how they can support local residents and prevent such incidents.”

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said: “We are aware of some ongoing issues in the area and are working with Police Scotland to deter further incidents.

“We have also asked Glasgow Housing Association to secure bin areas where possible.

“Replacement blue bins have been requested and we are progressing this.”

Police Scotland have been approached for comment.
