AMBITIOUS calls to flip a “dilapidated” skatepark up to standard have been widely back in Mount Vernon.

Locals have launched a petition to transform the Barrachnie Park space after it was “left to fall into a state of disrepair”.

An online poll has so far garnered more than 200 signatures with campaigners saying the arena, on Mount Vernon Avenue, is “unsafe” and proof “skateboarding is treated as a second class” sport.

Now, the area’s politicians have shown their support for the bid to breathe new life into the area.

Councillor Thomas Kerr said: “This looks like a brilliant campaign and one I am happy to support as the local councillor for the area.

“Mount Vernon has been left behind quite a lot when it comes to council support in helping our outdoor areas – heck it was only last year they attempted to sell off an area people use to walk on for a development.

“The skatepark has been left is a bad state for years now. I will ensure I take this up with council officials and with the local community council to see if we can get a plan to renovate the park for use in the years to come.”

The campaign has also been backed by MSP John Mason, who helped open the park when he was a councillor.

Mr Mason said: “Labour councillor Colin McNicol and I worked together to support this site when other locations were suggested.

“However, I fully accept it is no longer in a great state and I have had a number of constituents asking for an upgrade.

“I would certainly support its being replaced and improved.”

The Glasgow Times contacted Glasgow City Council for comment.
