A TERMINALLY ill Greenock woman has fulfilled her final wish by marrying her long-term partner in a heart-rending service.

Liz Bradley and her new husband John Hair were married in Ardgowan Hospice's in-patient unit after being engaged the week before.

The 66-year-old was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in September, which was later found to have spread to her liver, abdomen and lungs.

It was quickly established that chemotherapy would not be effective and Liz was admitted to the hospice, where she's spent the last five weeks receiving compassionate care and being surrounded by her family.

Much-loved mum Liz and her partner, who have known each other for a long time, decided to tie the knot with the help of hospice staff and their families.

The new Mrs Hair said: "My daughter and hospice staff have helped me an awful lot.

"I was really surprised at how warm, caring and friendly the staff are.

"They can't do enough for me.

"The whole wedding day was so loving and the atmosphere was unbelievable.

"I wouldn't have wished it another way."

Family and close friends of the couple - Sharon McConnell, Gracie McConnell, Gemma McConnell, Dean McConnell, Graham Coyle and Ann Haggerty - were able to celebrate with them on the special day.

All the stops were pulled out for the special wedding.

On hand to conduct the ceremony was Fr Gerry McNellis of St Ninian's Church and the couple were treated to a performance from piper, John MacLeod.

The room was decorated with flowers by Dannielle Hendry, jewelry tiara and rings were purchased from Kilted Kin, a cake was made by Sophie Gault and staff at the in-patient unit put on a spread of celebratory food and drink.

Hospice doctor, Joni Miller, said: "It was such a beautiful day and I felt so lucky to be a part of it.

"It was a real celebration of love and the couple's family and hospice staff were all able to pull together to make it very special for them."

The family have also very kindly donated £1,000 to Ardgowan Hospice which will help other patients like Liz receive first-class care.

Overseeing all the wedding plans was Avril Pearson, hospice bereavement and counselling services co-ordinator, who worked quickly to make the couple's wishes come true.

She told the Tele: "I was so privileged to be asked to arrange the couple’s marriage.

"We endeavour to meet the needs of our patients wherever possible and this meant so much to this family.

"We were honoured to be able to carry this out as a team, giving wonderful lasting memories for the future."

Liz says her big day was just perfect.

She said: "It was like a dream and John and I would like to thank Ardgowan Hospice and everyone from the bottom of our hearts."
