IRRESPONSIBLE parents are causing dangerous parking problems at a Gorbals primary school.

Pupils at St Francis Primary have now launched a campaign to encourage drivers to stop ignoring road rules.

They are asking adults to sign a "school parking pledge" to encourage safer streets.

The parent council is also asking Glasgow City Council to extend its restricted parking scheme to include St Francis.

Local councillor Soryia Siddique visited the school recently to see problems first hand.

She said: "Parents and the St Francis Primary Parent Council have been in communication with regards to safety and traffic concerns around St Francis Primary School.

"They are clear in their asks for a Car Free Zone around the school, like those which are being implemented around the city.

"A site meeting with the parent council, St Francis Primary and Glasgow City Council has allowed a discussion around some practical solutions to improve road safety for children and families in the area.

"I look forward to seeing solutions to improving safety being implemented."

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said: “Unfortunately, it’s the minority of people who at drop off and pick up, are parking irresponsibly and who are causing safety concerns at the school.

“Officers have met with the school, the parent council and elected members to discuss a range of additional supports to try and resolve these.

“Parking attendants have been out over the last few days to enforce the double yellow lines outside the school and the parking restriction markings are going to be refurbished as some parents clearly can’t see them.

“We are also looking at extending the plan to introduce a restricted parking zone in the Gorbals to include the junction near the school which will hopefully help too.

“The parent council and school will continue to work together to educate parents about the dangers of irresponsible parking and there’s talks about introducing a parking pledge for families to sign up to.”
