A COUNCILLOR in north-west Glasgow has won an award for her contributions to the community.

Eva Murray of Garscadden/Scotstounhill has won the 2020 Councillor Award for Covid-19 Hero.

She was chosen at the virtual awards ceremony for her response to the pandemic, helping out with organisation, funding and helplines and bringing the community and businesses together to pool resources.

Councillor Murray’s pandemic efforts included volunteering with the G13/G14 Community Aid project, based at Yoker Resource Centre.

The Labour politician took to Twitter after the announcement and said: “I still can’t quite believe it.

“This win doesn’t just belong to me but to every single volunteer and community stalwart who stepped up during this crisis to ensure those across Glasgow has someone they could turn to.

“Thank you all so much - this means the world.”

Councillor Murray was selected in October as the Labour candidate for the Glasgow Anniesland constituency at next year’s Scottish Parliament election.

Other nominations in this year’s awards included two Drumchapel/Anniesland ward councillors - Elspeth Kerr of the SNP, also in the Covid-19 Hero category, and Labour’s Paul Carey in the Lifetime Contribution section.

Councillor Carey was named in the Queen’s Birthday honours list in October as a British Empire Medal recipient for his services to the community in Drumchapel.

The winners were decided by a panel of judges composed of senior councillors and leading stakeholders from across the sector. Competition was especially tight again this year with over 200 nominations received, a record amount for the awards. .

Jonathan Carr-West, chief executive of the Local Government Information Unit in Scotland, which organised the ceremony, said: “These councillors showcase the best of local government, those who have gone above and beyond to serve their communities during a hugely challenging 2020.

“I would like to extend my most sincere congratulations to Cllr Murray and thank her for her commitment to local government.

“We look forward to hearing more about her continued accomplishments in the future.”
