A WINTER celebration for families affected by cancer will take place online this Sunday.

The Beatson’s annual festive event is being done slightly differently for 2020 as coronavirus restrictions continue.

TV presenter Alison Walker, who is host for the afternoon, explained: “This year has been very difficult for many, but Christmas is a time when people rally together.

“It’s a time for hope for many and this is a lovely way to support such a fantastic charity which means a lot to local people.”

Alison will be joined at the Beatson Bauble event by Russell Jones, chaplain of The Beatson, campaigners Stephanie Hutton and Kristina Courts, former patient Lynsey Haggarty and long-term supporter and TV personality Laura Boyd.

Martin Cawley, CEO at Beatson Cancer Charity will open the event, which will include entertainment from Jessica Allen, Sophie Davies, professional singer John McLarnon, Kirkintilloch Male Voice Choir and Rock Choir leaders.

Alison, who has presented sport from all over the world for the BBC and other broadcasters, has supported the charity for around 10 years.

“It’s great to work with such a fantastic bunch of volunteers and staff who want to do the right thing, and it’s so rewarding to be part of that,” she said.

Glasgow Times:

“The fundraising team is so full of energy and always find a way through. Charities are having such a hard time just now, with no big dinners or major events to help with fundraising.

“The Beatson is a Glasgow institution but they have a much wider impact and what they do is so important.”

Morag Cunningham, fundraising director, said: “We’re so excited to bring our Bauble appeal to life. It’s been running since 2014 but this year is even more important to us as our services rely on donations.

“Thank you to all our ambassadors who have supported us in a year most will want to forget.”

Alison first presented the Winter Celebration last year and she is looking forward to hosting this year’s online version.

“It is full of joy and remembrance and very heart warming,” she says.

“It was a privilege to do it last year.

“Cancer touches everyone and right now, we all need to pull together.”

The Beatson’s Winter Celebration takes place on December 6, via You Tube Live, from 2.30pm until 4pm.

It costs £5 and donations are also welcome.
