PEOPLE in East Renfrewshire aged 60-64 are being urged to get their first ever free flu jab from two drop-in centres.

This is the first time the vaccine has been made freely available to this age group across Scotland. Traditionally only those over 65 are given the flu jab at this time of year.

The East Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP), which is running the December scheme, are urging all 60-64s to take advantage of the free inoculation programme.

The clinics are being held on December 12 and 13, between 9am and 3pm, at the Eastwood Health and Care Centre, in Clarkston.

An additional clinic will also take place on Saturday, from 9am to 3pm, at the Barrhead Health and Care Centre.

Those attending either flu clinic must wear a face covering and use hand sanitiser when entering and leaving the building.

Anyone sent an appointment letter by the NHS must bring it with them.

People in East Renfrewshire whose GP is in another council area should attend the clinics between 1pm and 3pm for their jab. Those in the 60-64 age group who have received a flu inoculation since September do not need to attend.

There are no travel restrictions within East Renfrewshire on people attending the flu vaccination centres.

Two clinics have already been held on December 5 and 6.

Dr Deirdre McCormick, chief nurse at East Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “If you’re invited to receive the flu vaccine, I’d strongly encourage you to do so.

“It’s the best protection we have against flu, as it’s free, safe and isn’t a live virus so it can’t give you flu.

“We’ve made the clinics by GP practices and at the weekend so they are as convenient as possible.

“It also means the health centres are otherwise closed which will help us keep everyone safe.”

Councillor Caroline Bamforth, chair of the East Renfrewshire Integration Joint Board, added: “This year more than ever it is important that those invited for vaccination take up the offer to protect themselves, their family and their community.”
