POLICE Scotland have vowed to bring the killer of gangster George Redmond to justice more than 12 years after he was murdered in a drive-by shooting.

The underworld figure was shot several times in the centre of Glasgow by a mystery gunman and died a short time later in the city’s Royal Infirmary.

Following the late-night assassination on October 6, 2008 detectives met a wall of silence and no one has since been arrested or stood trial.

Glasgow Times:

Redmond, from Possilpark, was a significant figure in the city’s organised crime network with links to some of its biggest players.

Due to their love of extreme violence Redmond and his gang had even earned the nickname the Pulp Fiction Crew after the hitmen in the Quentin Tarantino movie of the same name.

The victim’s older brother Pat Redmond says he doesn’t believe that those responsible for his brother’s murder will ever stand trial.

He also claims that the police were not fully committed to solving the case at the time because of his younger sibling’s reputation.

Glasgow Times:

Pat, 69, told the Glasgow Times:”We’ve heard next to nothing from the police in the last 12 years and I don’t feel much has been done in that time.

“In my opinion they quickly lost interest in his murder and were happy to sweep it under the carpet.”

However Police Scotland today insisted they are still committed to getting justice for the victims family.

Glasgow Times:

DCI Suzanne Chow said:“An extensive police investigation was carried out by a team of detectives following the murder of George Redmond, however, no arrests have yet been made in relation to his death.

“Undetected and unresolved homicides are never closed.

“Any new information that police receive will be fully investigated.

“We work closely with the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service and meet regularly to review outstanding undetected and unresolved homicides from across the country. “Working collaboratively as the Scottish Homicide Governance Board, the potential for new investigative and forensic opportunities are regularly assessed to maximise the ability to deliver justice for grieving families.

“Anyone with information can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Glasgow Times:

Redmond was shot as he stood outside the Waldorf Bar in Cambridge Street, a few yards from Sauchiehall Street, shortly before 10:30pm.

At the time the then Chief Constable Stephen House said his murder had had “clear links” to serious and organised crime and that it wouldn’t be an “easy one” to get to court.”

Prior to his murder Redmond had spent the Monday afternoon in various bars in the city’s West End with friends before ending up at the Waldorf.

As he stood outside making a phone call a stolen black Porsche Cayenne SUV drew up and shot him repeatedly in the back.

Redmond’s best pal John Maguire, also 42, who was standing next to him at the time of the attack was also hit but survived the attack.

Around nine shots in total were fired at both men from a range of about 15ft from an automatic pistol.

Glasgow Times:

Guests at the nearby Thistle Hotel, now Doubletree by Hilton, who heard the gunfire included competitors from the Acrobatic Gymnastics World Championships which was being held at the Kelvin Hall.

There were a number of theories about the motive behind Redmond murder all linked to his involvement in organised crime.

However Pat, who is a retired driver, insists that his younger sibling was not a major underworld figure and believes he was killed simply because he owed money to a “Mr Big”

He added:”George wasn’t a gangster, he was my wee brother.”
