The high streets of Glasgow are once again deserted after the city entered level four restrictions on Boxing Day.
Buchanan Street saw its usual Boxing Day footfall cut short when non-essential retail was forced to close.
It comes just two weeks after Glasgow shops and hospitality opened as the city returned to level three restrictions on December 12.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced the move last Saturday in response to a more transmissible mutant of Covid-19.
Ms Sturgeon said delivering the news “makes me want to cry”, and said: “I share that sense of fatigue and demoralisation about this.
“If it wasn’t for this new strain, I wouldn’t be standing here right now announcing this because our case levels right now – because of the levels approach we’ve taken – are actually quite stable."
Earlier this week, the Scottish Government adapted their definition of essential retail preventing homeware stores and garden centres from staying open.
Police officers may stop and check drivers though to be flouting travel restrictions as a travel ban comes into place.
A travel ban is in place between England and Scotland to prevent the spread of the variant north of the border.
