ANTI-LOCKDOWN protesters were cleared from George Square yesterday and one man was arrested.

He is alleged to have broken Covid regulations, resisted arrest and breached the peace.

Two other men and a woman were fined for breaking strict lockdown rules after the city centre demonstration.

Glasgow Times:

One man has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

Protesters had gathered in the city centre to rail against lockdown measures intended to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Every local authority in mainland Scotland is currently under level four lockdown restrictions, meaning gatherings such as protests are subject to strict health and safety measures and that police have the right to disperse people if there is a clear breach of these rules.

Glasgow Times:

Critics of the government’s lockdown policies have been known to gather in the square and have distributed leaflets containing conspiracy theories about vaccines and questioning the necessity of strict rules requiring social distancing.

A top Glasgow cop has pleaded with the public to continue following the rules after yesterday’s protest.

Chief Inspector Craig Walker, Glasgow City Centre Division, said: “Following a demonstration in Glasgow City Centre on Monday, December 28, 2020, one man has been arrested in connection with a breach of Covid regulations, resisting arrest and a breach of the peace.

Glasgow Times:

“A further two men and a woman were issued with Fixed Penalty Notices for breaching Covid restrictions. One man has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

“The Chief Constable has made it clear that we continue to ask people to take personal responsibility to do the right thing.

Glasgow Times:

“Please follow the regulations and guidance, and remember the purpose of these measures is to aid the collective effort to stay safe, protect others and save lives by preventing the virus from spreading.

“Our officers will continue to engage with the public, explain the legislation and guidance and encourage compliance. We will use enforcement as a last resort only where there is a clear breach of the legislation.”
