A COLD spell affecting Glasgow is due to continue, with temperatures expected to remain slightly below average into next week.

Thermostats in the city are likely to show single digits and rain is said to be on the way, according to the Met Office.

The forecaster's warning comes on a day where Glasgow has been hit by "black ice" on pavements and roads, forcing many locals to take extra care.

Council leader Susan Aitken wrote this afternoon on Twitter: "I know conditions are rough (I came a cropper yesterday in Linn Park) and our reinforced gritting teams are reaching as many places as possible, but conditions are v[ery] difficult for them.

"Overnight rain washes away previous grit then freezes again on impact. It’s an endless task.

"Council staff will be checking that grit bin supplies are replenished."

As a result of the cold spell, council chiefs have also confirmed there could be delays to bin collections in the city.

A spokesman said: "Our gritting teams are out across Glasgow continuing to treat roads and pavements to tackle ongoing winter conditions.

"As a result our refuse collection schedules may lag behind so for those that present their bins. Please leave them out until they are collected."

Colder weather is also expected across the UK at the end of the month as sudden warming in the stratosphere moves down into our atmosphere.
