A THUG who left a man and a woman badly hurt after brutal lockdown attacks has been jailed for more than five years.

Michael Jones, 46, had recently been freed early from prison when he turned on James McCulloch last April 1.

The 53-year-old suffered a brain injury after he was repeatedly struck with a table leg at a flat in Drumchapel.

He had tried to stop Jones from attacking his 36-year-old friend Nicola Black, who ended up with a fractured nose.

Jones was today sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow.

He earlier admitted assaulting both victims to their severe injury and permanent disfigurement as well as to the danger of Mr McCulloch's life.

Jones was sentenced to four and a half years - but must first serve 320 days from a previous jail-term.

Lord Armstrong told him: "You were on licence having been released from prison just over two months earlier.

"Your criminal record runs from 1991 to 2019. I count some 59 previous convictions.

"You have been sentenced 28 times to periods of detention or imprisonment including twice at the high court."

A previous hearing was told how Jones had pinned Ms Black to the ground and punched her.

Mr McCulloch pulled Jones away before he was also attacked.

Prosecutor Angela Gray said: "He repeatedly struck Mr McCulloch on the head and body with a wooden table leg.

"Mr McCulloch fell to the floor and Jones continued to strike him with the makeshift weapon."

Police later found Mr McCulloch in the blood splattered flat.

The court heard he had bruising on the brain, three fractured ribs, a collapsed lung as well as a head wound.

Ms Black had a fractured nose and a cut cheek.

Jones was traced and claimed to have woken up with blood on his hands, but could not recall how it happened.

Lorraine Glancy, defending, said Jones had a "dreadful" record and realised what occurred was "unacceptable".
