A community football centre in the East End has been targeted by vandals.

Steel fences surrounding the Stepford Complex were cut open overnight between Thursday and Friday.

Police have launched an investigation into the vandalism.

The centre blasted the incident on social media and wrote: "Can’t believe after all the community hard work at Stepford to get and keep it open someone thinks it’s ok to cut and damage the fence.

"Can’t be kids surely as heavy-gauge steel would need a bit of strength. WHY!!!!! Police looking at CCTV now."

Councillor Ruairi Kelly said: "It's absolutely infuriating to see mindless destruction of community assets.

"The same people that carry out this sort of vandalism will turn round and claim their area has nothing."

It comes as FARE Scotland is developing plans alongside Glasgow City Council to redevelop Stepford Complex.

The grassroots charity urged people to "look after" their facilities.

"Please look after our facilities and hopefully we can bring the venue back to one that is known for developing the best young talent," the charity wrote.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "We received a report of a vandalism at a premises in Edinburgh Road, Glasgow, which happened overnight 7th to 8th January. Enquiries are ongoing."

Glasgow Life was contacted for comment.
