The brother of a man who slipped on ice and later died in hospital believes his death was "completely avoidable".

Kevin Kelly was found injured after the fall on Motherwell's Shields Drive in the early hours of New Year's Day.

He was taken to Wishaw University Hospital where he sadly died a few days later.

The man's brother Gary Kelly, 49, has slammed ungritted streets following the tragic accident, The Scottish Sun on Sunday reports

Gary told the paper they had "no idea how long" Kevin was lying on the ice.

He was found by a warden in a block of flats that saw him on CCTV.

He said: "We had to make the decision to take him off life support and let him slip away.

“Those pavements should have been gritted — it was an accident waiting to happen. My brother should still be here.”

Friends of the dad set up a fundraising page to support his family which has raised more than £1,345.

Gary added: "We don’t want another family to go through what we are.”

A North Lanarkshire Council spokesman said: “Our thoughts and condolences go to Mr Kelly’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“During this very cold period our gritting fleet has been operating at full capacity to treat prioritised primary and secondary roads and footpaths in line with the council’s winter service policy.

“We do not routinely treat most residential streets or pavements. Salt bins are provided in key locations to allow residents to treat their local streets and pavements.”
