A GLASGOW DIY venue is looking for new owners as the threat of permanent closure looms.

Glasgow Autonomous Space (GAS) wants someone to come forward to take legal ownership of the venue, housed in a unit in an industrial estate in Kilbirnie Street because the current leaseholder is backing out.

The 7-year-lease was signed in 2016 and allowed the collectively-owned venue to host gigs, club nights, workshops and classes in the space.

In a statement posted to Facebook, the group said: "The individuals that are legally bound to GAS, through insurance and bank account, would like to step down after being involved for a long time. There isn't really a collective any more and energy is low."

The group want individuals or organisations which share GAS's values to take overall responsibility for the not-for-profit venue.

According to its social media, GAS is "an autonomous social centre that provides space for groups working to fight capitalism and other forms of oppression".

They have set up a timescale of the six months to complete the transition and if they cannot find new owners, the venue will close.

It is currently supported by donations and said that if the centre closes "with donations to spare" these will be passed on to the Edge Fund, a charity which finances left-wing groups in the UK and Ireland.

The statement added: "If we can’t find anyone to take it over then we will separate the space from the ‘spirit’ of GAS (the online presence, values etc) and close the space, with potential for people to take GAS into a new space if they like.

"A massive thank you to everyone who has supported us, hung out in GAS, made it what it is.

"We realise that people may be concerned if you use the space or have stuff there. It may be worth starting to consider contingency plans if you rely on GAS. But we will be taking things step by step and keeping everyone updated as much as possible."
