A PARANOID man high on drugs entered shops and pubs while clutching a knife.

Usman Rehman terrified workers and members of the public at the premises in Kirkintilloch in August 2019.

The 23-year-old acted “deranged” and claimed he was being targeted.

It was later discovered that he had earlier taken a high amount of cocaine and was put in intensive care.

Rehman pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner.

The court heard Rehman took the blade from his former lover’s work at ice cream shop House of Flavours.

Prosecutor Mark Allan told the court Rehman had been “agitated and acted bizarrely.”

He then ran into the Lion and Star pub with the knife and a panic alarm was activated.

Rehman fled the scene into a nearby William Hill bookmakers and hopped over the counter.

Mr Allan said: “He was still with the knife and behaving bizarrely and asked the 23-year-old female cashier to help him, but she was understandably focused on the knife.”

CCTV showed Rehman jumping over the counter before entering The Kirky Puffer pub.

He ran behind the counter before being confronted by the manager and a member of staff.

Mr Allan said: “His appearance in the bar with the knife cause the staff to scatter and run.

“When he was behind the bar he said they’re after me, they’re after me”

Rehman ran off once again into a Dominos restaurant where members of the public were seen on the footage fleeing the scene in terror.

He went into the kitchen area while appearing “confused and constantly looking around him.”

Rehman later voluntarily entered the back of the police car after another alarm was raised and the knife fell to the ground.

Mr Allan said: “An officer said the accused was exhibiting signs of delirium and appeared to be under the influence due to the way he was presenting.”

His lawyer Raymond McIlwham told the court he was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment.

He said: “He ingested cocaine and that’s why he was described as him being in a sense of delirium.

“He was place in intensive care and received numerous sedations.”

It was also revealed Rehman, of the city’s Pollokshields, has a previous conviction for the unlawful possession of a baseball bat.

Sentence was deferred until next month for background reports by Sheriff Martin Jones who granted Rehman bail.

The sheriff said: “You have now pleaded guilty to a very serious offence in full view of staff in the shops and members of the public.

“You voluntarily ingested drugs and this doesn’t deviate responsibility for your actions.”
