Glasgow City Council generates the most amount of revenue from parking fines than any other local authority in the UK, according to new research.

Figures revealed through Freedom of Information found that over £5.4 million was generated from the penalties in the past year.

The research, conducted by comparethemarket, showed that ticket officers handed out 288 fines every day between August 2019 to July 2020.

Among the findings, Wellington Street in the city centre was crowned parking fine hotspot after receiving the highest number of penalties.

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: “Parking restrictions are an essential tool for managing the roads network and helping to keep traffic flowing as much as possible.

“Restrictions on parking also help to ensure that there is equitable access to a finite number of on-street parking spaces across the roads network.

“Parking attendants can only issue a penalty charge notice when they believe there has been a violation of the traffic regulations.

“The best way to avoid a penalty charge notice is to follow the parking restrictions at all times.

“All penalty charge notices can be reduced by £30 if the person responsible for violating the parking regulations pays the fine within fourteen days.”

Head of motor at comparethemarket, Dan Hutson, said: “Parking fine revenues are a cash cow for many local authorities. Up and down the country drivers are regularly being caught out by tight parking restrictions.

"With the third lockdown now in place, we would encourage drivers to take extra care and attention when parking up their car to ensure they avoid a parking fine."
