NICOLA Sturgeon will today announce whether lockdown measures across Scotland will be extended.

The First Minister confirmed the cabinet will meet this morning and make a decision on either ending restrictions on or continuing them beyond January 31.

Yesterday, Ms Sturgeon said she would outline in a meeting of the Scottish Parliament “where we are and whether we need to extend the lockdown restrictions to suppress the virus".

Coronavirus: The Glasgow areas with the most positive cases in the last week

Speaking during her daily briefing on Monday, Ms Sturgeon said: "At tomorrow's [Tuesday] cabinet meeting we will look at the latest data and come to a view of where we are and whether we need to extend the lockdown restrictions to help us further suppress the virus."

Ms Sturgeon will set out any changes to lockdown measures during a meeting of the Scottish Parliament at 2pm today.

Current restrictions to slow the spread of the bug include: schools being shut to most pupils; pubs, bars, and restaurants closed; click and collect services reduced; restrictions on sport; and the closure of places of worship.

A decision will be made on whether to extend home-schooling beyond the end of the month, but just last week education secretary John Swinney said return to on-campus learning by February 1 would be “a tall order”.

On schools, the First Minister yesterday said: “As soon as we have taken a decision, I will set that out to Parliament. I think that is the best and fairest way of proceeding.

"I would say we want to get schools back as quickly as we possibly can, it is not in the interests of kids to be out of school for any longer than is absolutely necessary but community transmission has always been a key factor in these decisions."

Meanwhile, Ms Sturgeon said that the vaccination programme was “rapidly expanding” and that more than a quarter of a million people have now had the first dose in Scotland.

The First Minister said that all people in priority groups 1 and 2 would be vaccinated by the start of February, all in groups 3 and 4 which is all over 70 and the clinically extremely vulnerable by the middle of February and all over 65s by the beginning of March.

She said the aim was to vaccinate all over 50s by early May and then the programme would move on to the rest of the adult population.
