THE funeral of the Archbishop of Glasgow will be held this week. 

Philip Tartaglia will be laid to rest in a service at St Andrew's Cathedral on Thursday following his sudden death. 

The leader of the Catholic Church in the city passed away in his home last week while self-isolating after a positive Covid-19 test. However, archdiocese bosses said it was too early to determine the cause of death of the 70-year-old.

Archbishop Tartaglia’s body will be brought to the city centre cathedral on Wednesday evening ahead of his funeral the next day. Under current coronavirus restrictions, only 20 of his family and friends will be able to attend.

A spokesman for the Archdiocese of Glasgow said: “People are asked to comply with the current advice to stay at home and to participate spiritually using the live streams.

“Please continue your prayers for the repose of the Archbishop’s soul and for the comfort of his family.”

Following his passing, tributes poured in for the Glasgow man with the likes of Nicola Sturgeon and Celtic FC paying their respects. 

As we previously reported, Monsignor Hugh Bradley, a parish priest in the South Side, will assume the role of administrator of the city's archdiocese until a permanent replacement for Philip Tartaglia is found.
